Subway Going Gluten-Free?

January 15, 2011

Subway is testing gluten-free sandwich buns and gluten-free brownies at 700 locations in Dallas and East Texas. If it is successful expect it to be available nationwide.
According to Celiac.Com and QSR Web the gluten-free sandwich buns and gluten-free brownies will come prepacked and individually wrapped. The same worker will prepare the sandwich from beginning to end and will be trained on how to cut the sandwich buns with a pre-wrapped knife for one time use, to avoid cross-contamination. The bread is made of egg whites, corn starch and tapioca starch. The brownie is made of potato starch, cocoa and sugar.
Subway was always one of my favorite places to eat before I found out that I am gluten intolerant. Now it seems that I might be able to eat there again. Now if we could just get Papa Murphy’s to serve gluten-free pizza, Papa Murphy’s is another favorite restaurant of mine that I wish I could eat at. We who are gluten intolerant and have celiac disease can contact restaurants and tell them that they need to have gluten free options in their menu and be persistent, they will get the idea.
